Sizing up the schedule

by Robbie Andreu

To help bridge the gap between the long, hot summer and the start of two-a-days in August, we offer this glimpse at Florida’s 2009 football schedule: * The sure thing: The Gators will score 60-plus points in their opener against a really bad, really out-manned Charleston Southern team. Quarterback Tim Tebow and most of the starters might be resting on the bench before halftime. UF will send a steady parade of fresh young athletes against a team that will be hopelessly … Read More »

State attorney reviewing Jenkins case

by Robbie Andreu

At this point there is nothing new to report in the Janoris Jenkins case. Witnesses are still being interviewed and there most likely won’t be a resolution for another seven to 10 days, according to Spencer Mann, the chief investigator and public information officer at the office of the state attorney. — John Patton

Spiegs gets it done

by admin

Like most successful corporations, the University Athletic Association has many employees working behind the scenes who rarely get recognized for their good work outside their own offense. It’s time to give a shout out to one such employee at UF — associate athletic director Mike Spiegler. Spiegler is the man behind the hiring of new women’s golf coach Jan Dowling on Monday. Spiegs conducted the search, did all the leg work (and it was considerable, I’m told), came up with a list … Read More »

Gators are in the money

This probably won’t come as a shock to anyone. Florida’s overall athletic program in 2008-09 ranked in the top three nationally in terms of generating revenue. According to figures reported by Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal earlier this week, UF’s overall athletic program generated $106 million, third most in the nation behind only Texas ($120 million) and Ohio State ($117 million). Five other SEC schools ranked in the top 13 nationally — Auburn (7th, $89.31 million), Alabama (8th, $88.87 million), Tennessee (9th, $88.72 … Read More »

The latest on Janoris

by admin

What we’re hearing about cornerback Janoris Jenkins is that there is a good chance the State Attorney’s Office will drop the charges against him. This could all come down in the next week or two. Jenkins was arrested last week on misdemeanor charges of affray and resisting arrest without violence stemming from his involvement in a fight downtown. Jenkins was Tasered by police during the incident. After initially trying to run from police, police said Jenkins was cooperative during the arrest. Jenkins claims he was fighting … Read More »

The media’s favorite

by admin

Would be surprised if a team other than Florida is ranked No. 1 in The Associated Press preseason college football poll due out in mid-August. Most preseason magazines worth a darn have the Gators No. 1. The Sporting News preseason annual, always a keeper, has UF at No. 1, followed by Texas, Oklahoma, Southern Cal, Ole Miss, Virginia Tech, Oregon, LSU, Ohio State and Oklahoma State. Athlon’s college football Web site has its own countdown, with its preseason top pick due out Thursday. … Read More »
