Florida coach Urban Meyer stopped short of naming his starting offensive line Monday because there still are some options to consider.
The feeling is that if the season started today, here’s how the Gators would line up on the offensive front: Matt Patchan at left tackle, Carl Johnson at left guard, Maurkice Pouncey at center, Mike Pouncey at right guard and Marcus Gilbert at right tackle.
The only holdup seems to be whether to go ahead and name Patchan a starter, even … Read More »

Say it ain’t so, coach
Those who cover the Gators on a daily basis appreciate Urban Meyer. He’s accessible, he’s a good quote, he’ll give you nice anecdotes on players you’re doing features on, he speaks what’s on his mind. He’s open and honest.
Meyer has reached the point where he is asked questions about a wide variety of topics around college football (and sports in general) because his opinion is so respected. He’s like Steve Spurrier in that regard. He has strong opinions and is … Read More »

Meyer’s culture shock
After a recent practice, Urban Meyer offered up a glimpse of the football culture he inherited when he arrived in Gainesville in 2005.
Clearly, the Gators were a team divided in the troubled Ron Zook era. That was in part reflected by the way the true freshmen were treated.
Meyer said when he got here, the freshmen had a very drab locker room that was separate from the team locker room, and that the veteran players would mistreat the newcomers … Read More »

Gators get a rest
Florida coach Urban Meyer gave his weary, leg-heavy Gators a day off from practice Thursday, canceling the morning workout as a reward for two weeks of heavy work in the heat.
Meyer has done this in the past.
This break seems well-deserved, because by all accounts this has been perhaps the toughest, most competitive preseason camp the Gators have had under Meyer. This all goes back to Meyer’s desire to keep this team focused and from falling complacent, something the … Read More »

The Haden smoke screen
Are the Gators really going to let cornerback Joe Haden play some quarterback in the Wildcat formation this season, or is this just a ruse to give UF opponents one more thing to worry about (and prepare for) this season?
This comes into question after what’s happened over the last several days.
Last Friday, Urban Meyer said Haden was getting some work at quarterback and that he could see some playing time on offense.
On Monday, Haden, who threw for … Read More »

Best defense ever?
With 11 starters and all their backups returning on defense, many are predicting this has a chance to be the best Florida defense in history, which would be saying something.
That’s a fine (and attainable) goal, but star junior defensive end Carlos Dunlap wants to take it one giant step beyond that.
He wants this to be the best defense period. Ever.
“Our goal this year is to be the best defense to ever play in college football,” Dunlap … Read More »

Gators get to work
With the four preseason Florida football practices that are open to the public, here are some of the things I’m going to be checking out:
* John Brantley’s ankle: The No. 2 quarterback underwent surgery in the spring and still was not 100 percent in the middle of July. He said at the time that he was on schedule to be full-go for the start of drills. Brantley had an excellent spring and needs to keep that going in camp … Read More »
