Sugar Bowl prediction time

by Robbie Andreu

Here’s my first prediction: Alabama won’t even come close to looking as good as it did in the Tide’s thumping of Florida in the SEC Championship Game. Florida’s mystifyingly bad performance on defense contributed greatly to the efficiency of the Tide offense. That Alabama offense will return to what it was earlier in the season in the BCS Championship Game. So, here’s what to look for in that game in Pasadena: a very close defensive struggle with not a lot … Read More »

Were the mighty Gators too full of themselves?

by Robbie Andreu

NEW ORLEANS — Riding a 22-game winning streak and feeling no one could beat them, the Florida Gators got knocked down a huge notch in the SEC Championship Game. Alabama humbled and embarrassed the No. 1 team in the nation. That’s why the Gators are here now instead of getting ready to go to Pasadena for theBCS Championship Game against Texas. Clearly, for some strange reason, the Gators did not appear ready to play in the SEC title game. Mentally and … Read More »

News and notes from New Orleans

by Robbie Andreu

We offer a little this and that from New Orleans: * Now that defensive line coach Dan McCarney has said he has no desire to become UF’s next defensive coordinator, the assistant on the staff most likely to be promoted to the position (if that’s what Urban Meyer chooses to do) is safeties coach Chuck Heater, who has worked with Meyer the past seven years. Outgoing defensive coordinator Charlie Strong said Tuesday that Heater would be a good pick to … Read More »

by Robbie Andreu

Florida coach Urban Meyer will pretty much disappear after Friday’s Sugar Bowl when he begins his indefinite leave of absence to take care of his health issues. But quarterback Tim Tebow, who has called Meyer his father away from home, plans on spending some quality time with Meyer after the season. Tebow said he expects to get Meyer out on the golf course. “Hopefully, I’ll beat him in golf a few times,” Tebow said. Tebow and Meyer are very close, … Read More »

Prediction time for the juniors

by Robbie Andreu

Because there are no games to predict this week, it seems like a good time to look at what Florida’s much-discussed juniors will be doing after the Sugar Bowl in terms of the NFL Draft.

Say goodbye to the Gatornaughts?

by Robbie Andreu

It looks like most of the Lakeland boys will be bolting on the Gators after the Sugar Bowl. That’s the word from Bruce Black, the father of junior strong safety Ahmad Black. Bruce Black told me Wednesday that it is a 90 percent certainty that his son, strong safety Ahmad Black, is leaving early for the NFL Draft. He said the other top junior players from Lakeland — offensive linemen Maurkice and Mike Pouncey and tailback Chris Rainey — … Read More »
