MOBILE, Ala. — Back in 1992, when I first saw Danny Wuerffel on the Florida practice field, I quickly formed an opinion about the true freshman quarterback. My thought was: this kid can’t play. His throwing motion was short and awkward. His passes fluttered off target. He didn’t look like much of a prospect at all.
Then a few days later, the Gators scrimmaged — and the real Danny Wuerffel emerged. When it meant something, he elevated his game to another … Read More »

Coop getting it done
MOBILE, Ala. – While the whole world seems to be focused on what quarterback Tim Tebow is doing this week at the Senior Bowl, his former Florida roommate is quietly doing some impressive things of his own in front of the hundreds of coaches and scouts present.
Riley Cooper has been the most consistent wide receiver on the South team. He had another good day Thursday, catching numerous passes, including one that went for a touchdown in seven-on-seven.
”This has been a … Read More »

Tebow finding a comfort zone
MOBILE, Ala. — Florida quarterback Tim Tebow continues to make progress in practice leading up to Saturday’s Senior Bowl.
Tebow had perhaps his best practice of the week Wednesday afternoon. He appeared more comfortable than he did earlier in the week under center and operating a new offense. Tebow bobbled only one hand-off Wednesday, after dropping several in the first two practices.
Tebow said the repetition in a new system is starting to pay off.
“I’m just feeling a little … Read More »

Mattison weighs in on Tebow, Meyer
MOBILE, Ala. — I ran into former Florida defensive coordinator Greg Mattison at a recent South practice for the Senior Bowl, and the Baltimore Ravens’ defensive coordinator was gracious enough to give us his take on several topics, including Tim Tebow and the health of Urban Meyer:
On Tebow in the draft: “I see Tim Tebow doing anything Tim Tebow wants to do. When people ask me about him, I say I don’t know about the technical things, I don’t … Read More »

Tebow draws a crowd
MOBILE, Ala. — As he transitions from college superstar to NFL quarterback, Tim Tebow is having to deal with a lot of new stuff this week at the Senior Bowl. New coaches, new schemes, new teammates, new expectations.
But one thing has not changed for the popular Florida quarterback.
He’s still a rock star.
Even here, in the heart of Crimson Tide and War Eagle country, Tebow is revered and adored. Hundreds of fans, many of them wearing Alabama or Auburn (and even … Read More »

Some relaxing tips for Meyer
Even though Urban Meyer is still hard at work trying to close out what looks like a special recruiting class, the head ball coach, by all accounts, is already finding ways to relieve some of the stress that has been building around him for years. He’s sleeping in some mornings, working out, eating right, and generally feeling better.
After signing day, Meyer will begin his indefinite leave of absence. The prediction here is he could be back as soon as the … Read More »

Take him off the commitment list
I’ve made a commitment to my boss that I will write this blog. If may be long, it may be late, it may be lousy, but it will get done.
I’m committed to it.
I bring this up, because this is the time of year I’m left scratching my noggin over some of these high school recruits who say they are committed to schools but actually aren’t.
Last year, it was Nu’Keese Richardson.
This year, it’s Demar Dorsey.
Richardson was … Read More »

One more coaching change?
Just when it looked like things were settling down over at Florida with the hiring of Miami Dolphins’ assistant coach George Edwards, Jim Leavitt went and got himself fired at South Florida on Friday.
What this means is there could be another opening on the Florida coaching staff real soon, just after Meyer filled his staff Friday when he named Edwards the Gators’ defensive coordinator.
Defensive line coach Dan McCarney almost certainly will be considered a leading candidate to replace … Read More »
