Being Florida’s new starting quarterback, March 17 is a crucial date for John Brantley. That’s the day spring football practice begins and he officially takes over for Tim Tebow.
But there is a bigger, more important date looming before then. March 10. That’s the day Brantley’s father, former UF quarterback John Brantley, will undergo surgery for prostate cancer.
“It’s going to be a tough day, a really tough day,” Brantley said Friday. “But stuff happens. He should be fine.”
Brantley … Read More »

Jags fans: We want Tebow!
When it comes to the NFL Draft, the fans have no voice. They’re free to watch, free to cheer or boo selections, but they have no say in who their team selects.
That may be about to change in Jacksonville. Jaguar fans are applying some major pressure on their team to draft hometown hero Tim Tebow in the first round of the draft.
Some Jags’ fans have created a Web site called draft15.com. The message on the site is simple … Read More »

Meyer bashers off target on this one
Before we dive into this, I’ll like to bring up a few facts about Tim Tebow.
Over the past three seasons, he was one of the most efficient passers in all of college football. For his career, he threw for more than 9,200 yards, completed almost 66 percent of his passes and produced 89 touchdown passes. Oh yeah, and he won the Heisman as a sophomore after throwing for 3,132 yards and 32 touchdowns.
I bring all this up because … Read More »

Everybody’s doing the loca-motion
I just saw the ESPN tape of Tim Tebow’s new throwing motion. To be honest, it doesn’t look all that different than his old throwing motion, even in slow motion.
Yes, he’s holding the ball higher, right next to his left ear (something quarterback coaches teach at an early age), and by positioning the ball there, the tendency to drop his throwing hand below his waist (which he did before) is a lot less likely.
Tebow certainly looked good zipping … Read More »

Meyer has that rejuvenated look
Seen last Friday before a golf outing, Urban Meyer sounded good, and he looked really good, like a guy who’s got a lot of juice again.

Time to visit Moody again
Because he is such a talent, and has been such an enigma in his time at Florida, tailback Emmanuel Moody has been discussed in this blog many times over the past two years.
We’ve talked about his injuries, his durability. His potential, his frustration. His flashes of greatness, followed by his mysterious and befuddling disappearances in the offense.
Now, we’ve got something new to talk about: Moody’s opportunity to become the tailback everyone thinks he can be now that Stan Drayton is … Read More »

New coaches make an impression
Florida had a meet-and-greet with the three new assistant coaches (D.J. Durkin, Stan Drayton and Teryl Austin) on Wednesday, making them available to a small gathering of the media.
All three said Urban Meyer’s health situation was not an issue in their decision to take jobs at Florida. They all seem confident that Meyer will do what he has to do to return.
In the meantime, they all praised the job interim coach Steve Addazio has done running the program … Read More »

Demps burning up the track
Florida tailback Jeff Demps is having a big (and very fast) indoor track season.
This past weekend, Demps won the men’s 60-meter dash at the prestigious Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., in an NCAA automatic-qualifying time of 6.59 seconds. His time tied teammate Terrel Wilks for the UF school record and bested his previous personal-record time of 6.61 achieved the previous week at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet.
Demps’ performance in Arkansas earned him SEC athlete of the week honors.
Demps holds the … Read More »

Drayton hire rates high
New Florida running backs coach Stan Drayton was named the top running back position coach hire by Rivals.com on Tuesday.
Drayton, who coached the running backs at Florida in Urban Meyer’s first three seasons at UF (2005-07), was hired by Meyer in January to replace Kenny Carter, who left to accept a job at Louisville with former UF defensive coordinator Charlie Strong. Drayton coached the running backs at Syracuse in 2008.
Rivals.com college football senior writer Tom Dienhart describes Drayton as a … Read More »

Gators picking up a kicker
The Florida Gators didn’t have room to sign a kicker in the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class, but it now looks like they’re going to add one to the incoming freshman class.
According to the St. Petersburg Times, Marvin Kloss, a three-star kicker from Naples Barron Collier, has decided to accept a walk-on offer from Florida. Kloss was offered a scholarship and grayshirt by South Florida. As a grayshirt, he would not have enrolled at USF until January of 2011. Now, … Read More »
